BACKGROUND

For the first eighteen years of her life, Pandora's entire world was contained within the walls of a laboratory clean room. The young woman known then only as Subject RD-01 believed herself to be the only survivor of a genetic engineering experiment. Born with keen intelligence, her days were divided between assisting in research and being subjected to a variety of experiments and tests. Pandora believed these experiments would help fight a wide range of diseases and genetic disorders. The lead scientist on the project, Rodrigo Diaz, assured her that they would also find a cure for her “condition” and she could eventually leave the lab and venture into the outside world.

Then another Emejre named Owen Matthias arrived and everything fell apart.

There were thousands of Emejre like her, Emejre who had escaped from similar labs three years prior. The experiments she believed would give her a human appearance and help fight disease were actually designed to create a virus to target and kill the Emejre. RD-01 would remain safe in the clean room, but might never be able to leave due to the virus being released into the world.

She took the only copy of the data she'd compiled and escaped with Owen moments before the lab came under attack. The pair managed to leave the lab but found themselves lost in the Penumbra, a section of the Emejre Reservation from which none of their kind had ever escaped.

Desperate to confirm her suspicions, she opted to join up with Owen to find a way out. After a series of unsuccessful suggestions, an off the cuff remark led to her taking the name Pandora. She's determined to find her way to safety... and to explore the outside world she's never experienced before.

 

PERSONALITY

Pandora is a relentless optimist, able to squeeze positives from even the most dire situations .This can lead to her being a little naïve about the world around her and quick to trust anyone who treats her with kindness. She'll give others second, third and forty-seventh chances, so long as they haven't done anything to harm her friends... and it doesn't take long for Pandora to consider someone around her a friend.

In addition to her positivity, Pandora is an endless fount of curiosity and wonder. Life's a grand adventure, whether she's in the middle of a pitched quest or running to the store for milk. There's always something new to discover, a new aspect of the world that she'd fascinated by. This isn't always a good thing, as she's been known to get distracted and even wander off if something catches her fancy.

For all of her positivity, Pandora has an abysmal sense of self confidence. Her keen hearing has allowed her to overhear every cruel joke and negative comment the scientists around her have made, and Diaz's attitude led her to think of her appearance as grotesque. Her lack of social skills only serve to make this worse, as she's still trying to master the concept of personal space. She's prone to rambling and can talk herself into awkward corners.

That negative self image also manifests in a surprising competitive streak if she can use her natural skills. She's never one to pass up on a dare and will approach any challenge with single minded focus. Sometimes it's the only thing that can keep her on task, and her stubbornness can make her reluctant to ask for help even if she needs it. It's all tied into a deep seeded need to prove her worth to others, and if she fails she can sulk with the best of them.

While she'd never say anything to hurt a person's feelings on purpose, Pandora has a bluntness born from the straightforward nature of the scientific texts she read growing up. That combined with her social awkwardness and inexperience means she can say things that are better left unspoken.

If she does end up hurting someone's feelings, however, she'll do almost anything to make amends. Pandora values nothing in the world more than her friendships, and she's prone to spontaneous acts of kindness. Nothing brings her more joy than seeing a smile on a friend's face or brightening their day somehow. If she considers you a friend, there's no such thing as asking too much.

More often that not, Pandora comes across as a big kid, trying to make up for the childhood she missed out on. She loves cartoons and video games and holds a special fondness for bad puns. She's eager to try new things and has tried a number of hobbies, everything from origami to weaving. She loves to cook, though she's set the kitchen on fire twice. Her love of music is another problem, as she can't carry a tune to save her life. What she might lack in skill she always makes up for with enthusiasm.

 

ABILITIES

Like all Emejre, Pandora is a human-animal hybrid and as a result has heightened senses. Living in a controlled environment, this means she can sometimes be overloaded with stimuli if she's not careful. Born a red panda type Emejre, Pandora has a remarkable sense of balance and is a natural climber. This is helped by the claws in her fingertips, which she can extend over two inches if needed.

Pandora is a naturally quick learner, and she's well versed in both a wide range of scientific disciplines and 1980s trivia. She's a math whiz who can do calculations in her head with ease. She's started to train in self defense and martial arts, but she's still a beginner. Thanks to Owen's influence, she's also picking up a few burglary skills... just for curiosity's sake, of course!
